One of my favorite ways to have quality time in Zürich is to stroll and shop at the Farmer’s market. I love the colors of the food and flower stalls, the sound of many conversations between shoppers and vendors, the fresh selection and wider choice than you’d find at the supermarket, and the luxury of taking the time to choose something healthy and natural for the table.
I go to Helvetiaplatz in Kreis 4 – it’s small and friendly and is open on Tuesdays and Fridays (7-11am). Here you’ll find freshly baked pastries, cheese and meat stalls, antipasti, fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers and garden plants. The flower stalls always get me. I can never walk by without taking a photo and if I have the time, I love to be there early in the morning, choosing between the different flowers, playing around with options and building my own bouquet.
I always talk to the vendors in German and feel a little achievement when I manage to do the entire purchase, understand everything that is said, and even get a smile at the end! 🙂
PS: I also secretly dream of having Fridays off when I can spend the morning shopping at the market for a big brunch or dinner and I do it all in Swiss German with ease. Maybe in 10 years…? 😀
